Winning Entries in the IUPAC Polymer Division Contest on “A World without Polymers” 2011

Video:
1. Y.C.S. Lann, First Place Video (Asia)
Yvonne Choo Shuen Lann is a Malaysian who has just completed her Matriculation. She will be pursuing her first-year degree in Pure Chemistry at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in September 2011. She is also the author of an educational blog for fourth and fifth-year secondary school students in Malaysia (www.yvonnechoo.co.cc). Since young, she has always wanted to become a scientist majoring in the field of Chemistry. Holding on to the saying ‘When there’s a will, there’s a way’, she believes that with her persistence and hard work, someday her dream of helping the world with Science will come true.

2. A. Gomes et al., Second Place Video (Europe)
We are a group of 5 teenagers that just wanted to have some fun while
studying polymers for Chemistry class, and ended up making our own video
contribution for the IYC 2011. We hope that it educates and at the same time
entertains you, so that we can all easily learn about something that is so
important in our lives.

3. C. Newby & M. Kunkel, Third Place Video (North America)
This video was written and edited by Melissa Kunkel. Melissa is a senior at Cornell University majoring in Materials Science and Engineering. To gain experience for the future she works in a lab that conducts research on polymers for electronics. Carol Newby is a graduate student in that lab and she helped film the movie and did some of the voiceovers. Melissa and Carol's aim was to make a movie that illustrated how polymers have found utility in many areas (not just drinks bottles...) by demonstrating, from start to finish, how polymers are use to make the miniturized circuits in all electronics.

Emmanuel Ochoche Peter was born on 9th June 1978 at Adoka, in Otukpo LGA of Benue State Nigeria. He attended the Benue State University Makurdi where he bagged B.Sc (Hons.) Chemistry in 2004. He was deployed to Kano State in 2005 for his NYSC. After his selfless service to the mother land, he bagged the following NYSC Awards: State Honours Award of outstanding performance and the President’s NYSC Honours Award of outstanding performance & sterling qualities in 2006. In 2009 he proceeded for his Master‘s Degree in Analytical Chemistry at the Bayero University Kano (BUK), Kano State Nigeria.

3. Bérengère ESCUYER et al.,It was a really great morning” (Europe)

Marylou DAUCH
I was born in Paris on March 15th 1991. I am twenty. I am graduated from high school, High School René Cassin in La Norville in 2009. I have a Bachelor of Science. Then, I studied at the ENCPB (as Chemistry, Physics and Biology National School) in Paris and I passed my Chemistry degree this year.
In my free time I like swimming, diving and discovering new cultures. During the high school I went to Australia like an exchange student for two months. I was at Fairholme College located in Toowoomba near Brisbane. It was an unforgettable experience. Since this trip, I really like travelling. Also, few years later I went to Cardiff University in Wales for my internship in chemistry. And it was a great experience too.

The chemistry was not my domain of preference. Indeed, before launching me in this way I wanted to be a vet. Since I am a little I like animals and during my four years spent in Yaounde (Cameroon - Africa), I took myself of passion for horse ridding what consolidated me in my idea to become a vet. But in1st scientific I realized that the chemistry attracted me more than the biology, that’s why I passed my A-levels STL (Sciences Laboratories Technology) option CLPI (Laboratory Chemistry and Industrial Processes) at the high school of “D’Arsonval” at Saint-Maur des Fossés (France), then I went to the ENCPB (National School of Chemistry, Physics, Biology) in Paris 13 where I passed my Chemistry degree this year.

I was able to integrate the European class which allowed me to do my training period of 1st year of BTS (two-year technical degree) Chemist of two months at Edinburgh University in the group of Doctor Jason Love which work on uranium chemistry and on the macrocycle like “Pacman” to try to activate and to transform some small molecules like N2, O2, CO2 by complexation of transition metals. Doctor Jason Love permits me to integrate one of his projects, led by James Leeland (PhD student) named "Towards secondary coordination sphere control using Schiff base Pacman ligands ".
This training period learnt me a lot and gave me the envy to continue my studies; that’s why I continue by a 3rd year of license(Bachelor's degree) Chemistry to the University of Versailles - Saint Quentin ( UVSQ) then by a Master's degree preparing to work for a company in food flavorings.
